The argument and the action of Plato's Laws

"In this intensive book-by-book examination, Leo Strauss arrives at a general interpretation of the Laws within the Platonic corpus. Through careful scrutiny of the actions and gestures of the speakers, analysis of the dramatic development and structure of the text, and penetrating discussion of the ideas on law and government, Strauss guides the reader through this intricate labyrinth of thought on the governing of a state. In contrast to the Republic, which presents an abstract ideal, neither intended for nor capable of being used as the legislative framework of an actual human community, the Laws provides guidelines for the establishment and maintenance of political order in the material world. With masterful interpretative skill, Strauss elucidates Plato's ideas on how the proper legislative and political foundation of a state will enable citizens to restrain selfish interest in favor of ideal political virtue and right opinion"--Unedited summary from book cover.
