"In this illustrated volume, Walter Feilchenfeldt covers the development of two artist's reputations over the past century or so, following the convoluted movements of various masterpieces from their origins to their present owners and taking in on the way scandals, forgeries and incorrect attributions. His essays muse on the history of collecting and identifying Cezanne and Van Gogh, and discuss questions of authenticity by showing reproductions of their works side by side. He evaluates numerous new sources proving provenance - among which are some confirming the authenticity of a group of hitherto disputed Van Goghs - and tells the story of the infamous Wacker forgeries and the 'odd' Cezannes in Dr Gachet's collection. The text is peppered throughout with many amusing anecdotes garnered from a forty-year career at the forefront of art dealing."--Jacket.
