The Cambridge Australian English style guide

"This is your indispensable companion to all the issues of written Australian English in the twenty-first century. It contains more than 3000 entries, and provides what every Australian writer, editor, English teacher and student needs to know about the common disputes of usage - points of word meaning, spelling, punctuation, grammar and style where usage is currently in flux. With so much communication carried out on the internet, The Cambridge Guide to Australian English Usage takes account of both print and electronic media, embracing issues such as email style and formats, online document structure, SMS and URLs, and how to reference the range of audiovisual media. It treats debatable issues such as the "americanisation" of Australian English, and the continuing need for inclusive language, along with other sociocultural aspects of usage." "The Cambridge Guide uses evidence from language databases (computer corpora), the internet, current dictionaries and grammars, as well as population surveys of attitudes to usage, to provide broadly based advice. It identifies more and less frequent usages, and the generic and stylistic contexts which affect our language choices. The relationship of Australian usage to British and American English is described wherever they diverge, and entries on Canadian and New Zealand English point out some of their distinctive aspects. Data from the most up-to-date editions of world references and from recent research lend authority to the discussion." "The Cambridge Guide to Australian English Usage is a book to refer to, browse in, and use to settle disputes with colleagues and friends."--BOOK JACKET.
