Explorations in contemporary feminist literature

Using the presentation of transgendered (female to male) characters by women writers as a jumping off point, Pernal (women's literature and creative writing, Teikyo-Post U.) explores how Toni Morrison, Rose Tremain, Maya Angelou, and other women writers confront issues of marginality in consciously ideological and personal ways. Although the position of transgendered people is the starting point the analysis is expanded to encompass wider issues of gender, race, and class.
