Submerged Structure
**Submerged Structure** is a poetry collection by [Thomas L. Vaultonburg](https://sites.google.com/view/thomas-l-vaultonburg), published by [Zombie Logic Press](https://sites.google.com/view/zombielogicpress/home) in 2012. Although published in 2012, many of the poems were written over the course of a single summer while the author was working in the bar and restaurant industry. Drawing its title from a real warning sign along the Rock River in northern Illinois, the collection uses the idea of hidden hazards beneath the surface as a recurring metaphor for identity, memory, and the unseen forces that shape ordinary lives. Blending humor, satire, autobiography, and philosophical reflection, the poems move freely between working-class life, popular culture, horror films, religion, literature, and everyday experience. Beneath the comic voice and irreverent subject matter, the collection explores themes of alienation, family, grief, work, mental health, and the search for meaning. Read in retrospect, *Submerged Structure* also foreshadows many of the concerns that would later emerge in Vaultonburg's subsequent books, including questions of belonging, memory, and human connection, though expressed here through a louder, more confrontational voice.
