In his early sixties and with his health failing, Jim Greer is still trying to eke out a living as a criminal defense lawyer in Cottam County, where his only remaining asset is his fading reputation as a scrapper. When Clifford Denny becomes the prime suspect in his wifeA[a¬a[s suspicious death, Greer agrees to represent him, only to withdraw as soon as he concludes that Denny has given him and the police a false alibi. Greer is too old and tired to listen to a client lie to him. As Denny is further entangled, Jim Greer watches from a not-so-comfortable distance, critical of the performance of DennyA[a¬a[s public defender, and finds himself subconsciously hoping that the police will develop something that will justify his abandonment of Clifford Denny. When Greer comes to admitA[a¬aat least to himselfA[a¬athat he has dodged a fight he was no longer fit to undertake, he is determined to redeem himself.
