Art historian, Marie Monfort is passionate about the theme of struggle, as a medieval tradition and recurring artistic motif. Delacroix, a classic atheist painter who draws his inspiration from the great masters, expresses through the idea of struggle as a physical and spiritual struggle, a universal projection of man. Delacroix began the restoration of the Chapelle des Saints-Anges in 1849 and set up his studio in 1857 rue de Fürstenberg, to be closer to Saint-Sulpice. This workshop, on the site of the current Delacroix Museum, offers the visitor the opportunity to discover an exceptional place, both an exhibition space for the artist's sketches and a historical site. Completed in 1861, his paintings reveal the technical virtuosity of the artist, then brought to its climax. They embody a rich work, entered into posterity as a source of inspiration for 20th century artists such as Chagall or writers like Kaufmann. Jean-Paul Kaufmann, in fact, has learned from a "fight with the angel" of Saint-Sulpice a mystical experience. For the playwright and filmmaker Patrice Chéreau, the rediscovery of Delacroix's works led him to an annual pilgrimage to Saint-Sulpice. It is this universal character of the work that the exhibition tends to reveal. The exhibition thus offers a real journey through time, from Raphael to Chagall.
