Vilhelm Hammershøi

"This book reproduces over 500 paintings, drawings, photographs, sketches, clips, postcards, and letters, which together provide a biographical, art history, and cultural history of Hammershøi and his work. Places were of great importance to Hammershøi, and he always chose very consciously where to live -- in older homes. The home was his studio and often his favorite subject. This book visits many of the places Hammershøi lived: Frederiksberg, Christianhavn, Falster, Paris, Gentofte, Refsnæs, Holland, Belgium, London, and Rome. The book's biographical section highlights important people and pivotal points for his life and work: his mother Frederik Hammershøi, his sister Anna Hammershøi, his teacher PS Krøyer, his wife Ida Hammershøi, his colleague Valdemar Schønheyder Møller, and his brother Svend Hammershøi." -- adapted from publisher
