Médicos maleantes y maricas

"Pathbreaking study of homosexuality in Buenos Aires in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Drawing upon a wealth of information (much of it from government medical and criminal reports), Salessi shows how state officials and scientists placed homosexuality into the category of 'disease' - a malady, which, like yellow fever, could be eradicated through proper public health measures. The subtleties and contradictions of their determination, and the basic unfairness of a system that saw machismo as the norm, make for fascinating reading"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
